The Ungermann Family
Life-Altering Traffic Accident
Our headquarters sits off Willow Road, minutes from the I-680 and I-580 interchange that carries most of the Tri-Valley to work every day. We see the crashes that come off those ramps, the falls inside Stoneridge Mall and the Hacienda Business Park, and the families across Pleasanton, Dublin, and Livermore whose lives change in a single afternoon. When that happens, you do not need a louder lawyer. You need one who has actually tried these cases in front of a jury.
Mirador Law was founded in 1973 and is led by former San Francisco public defenders Megan Burns and Emily Dahm. Between them the firm has more than 40 years of combined experience, close to a hundred jury trials, and two of California’s Top 50 plaintiff verdicts for 2024. Both partners are recognized by Super Lawyers. We are women-owned and LGBTQ+-owned, and the Tri-Valley is home.
We handle serious personal injury matters across the Tri-Valley: car, truck, and motorcycle collisions, bicycle and pedestrian injuries, slip and fall and other premises cases, dog bites, catastrophic injuries, wrongful death, and abuse cases including child and elder abuse and civil claims for sexual assault. If you are not sure whether you have a case, that is exactly what a free consultation is for.
A strong injury case is built early. We investigate while the evidence is fresh, request the right records, document how the injury has changed your daily life, and deal with the insurance adjusters so you do not have to. Insurers track which firms try cases and which ones always settle. Our trial record changes that conversation before it starts.
Most Pleasanton injury claims are governed by California law and filed in the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda. Civil cases are heard through the county’s civil division in Oakland at the René C. Davidson Courthouse, and the Gale-Schenone Hall of Justice serves the East County. Knowing how each venue moves, and which adjusters and opposing attorneys handle Tri-Valley claims, is part of preparing a case properly.
Common local injury settings include the I-680 and I-580 corridors, the Stoneridge Drive and Bernal Avenue arterials, downtown Main Street, and the parking structures and walkways around Hacienda Business Park and the Stoneridge shopping district. Serious injuries from the Tri-Valley are often treated at Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley in Pleasanton before more specialized care.
In California, the general deadline to file an injury lawsuit is two years from the date of the injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1. If a public entity is at fault, for example a dangerous roadway or a government vehicle, you generally have only six months to file an administrative claim under Government Code section 911.2. California also follows a pure comparative negligence rule, so even if you were partly at fault, your recovery is reduced by your share rather than barred.
The following hypothetical examples illustrate how these cases can unfold. They are not based on any specific client and are provided for educational purposes only. A commuter merging from I-680 onto westbound I-580 is rear-ended by a driver who was looking at a phone. The insurer offers a quick, low number before the full extent of a neck injury is known. With the medical picture documented and the case prepared for trial, the value of the claim is assessed on what the injury will actually cost over time, not on the adjuster’s first offer.
Nothing up front. We work on a contingency fee, which means you pay no attorney fee unless we recover for you. The first consultation is free and confidential.
Generally two years from the date of injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1, and only six months if a government agency is involved. Talk to a lawyer early so a deadline does not pass.
You can still recover. California uses pure comparative negligence, so your compensation is reduced by your percentage of fault but not eliminated.
